Our department consists of
both career and
volunteer staff.
Our volunteer personnel are a tremendous asset to our response
capabilities. These 34 wonderful individuals live on the
island and volunteer their time to train and respond to calls.
We would not be able to perform the level of service necessary
without their efforts.
Our career staff includes the
following:
Chief,
Deputy Chief,
3 Captains,
4 Lieutenants,

Public Safety Officers (PSO).
Administrative Assistant
12 part-time
PSO staff.
*PSO-I are firefighter, law enforcement and EMT-Basic trained.
*PSO-II are firefighter, law enforcement and EMT-Paramedic trained.
There are typically five PSO personnel
on shift 24-hours per day/seven days a week.
Shift
schedules are 24 hours on-shift, 72 hours off.
EMPLOYEE BENEFITS:
Fulltime PSO-I employees currently start with a base salary at around $38,000 annually,
and PSO-II employees start around $42,000 annually. This does not include regular scheduled overtime, holiday pay, or extra overtime. Benefits include NC State retirement system, 401K, health insurance options, supplemental insurance options, etc.
Part-time employees currently start at $13.00 per hour, with potential for $15.00 per hour after six-months probationary employment and certain credentials to include NC Firefighter Level II certification.
