Jerome "Chip" Munna, Jr. was hired as the Chief of Emergency Services on December 1, 2000. Prior to being hired as Chief, Chip had worked for the Village as a firefighter/paramedic since 1998. Subsequent to employment with the Village, Chip had worked for Brunswick County EMS since 1995 as a paramedic.
Chip's interests in becoming Chief were influenced by the challenges of being responsible for a service that is isolated from mutual aid fire and EMS departments, due to no connected bridge to the island. The need to have good personnel, assets, and planning is of paramount importance. Another interesting component is that of the Emergency Management role during hurricanes and other disasters.
A Virginia native, Chip was born in Roanoke and lived outside of Richmond until 1994. He moved to North Carolina to pursue a Criminal Justice Major at UNC-Wilmington. While at UNCW, Chip's interests evolved toward the fire service and emergency medicine which led to his current profession.
Chip obtained his paramedic credentials in 1995 and then obtained his AAS in Emergency Medical Services. He is also a state credentialed Level II Paramedic Instructor and a Level II Fire Instructor. He currently works part-time with the local
community college as a paramedic and fire instructor.
On July 1, 2009, the Village of Bald Head
Island merged the Fire-Rescue and Police departments into a
single department entitled the Department of Public
Safety. Chief Munna's new role is that of Chief of Public
Safety.
