URGENT ACTION REQUEST
- Shoreline Protection
Dear BHI Property Owner:
As indicated in my earlier letter, we
are asking for your help in influencing the North Carolina
Congressional Delegation to summon senior US Army Corps of
Engineers (USACE) leadership to Capitol Hill to demand that the
USACE address the navigation channel maintenance problem that is
adversely impacting the State of North Carolina and inflicting
heavy collateral damage on Bald Head Island.
We must act quickly if we are to be
successful in convincing the USACE to perform their long overdue
channel maintenance this winter and minimize the near-term
threat of ocean over wash damage to Bald Head. Our legal
initiative versus the USACE continues to move ahead and our
Congressional initiative has been successful to date in
increasing awareness and understanding of the channel
maintenance problem and its adverse impact to both the State and
to BHI. We can further establish and emphasize our position if
each of the 1000 individual BHI property owners who reside in NC
sends letters to the NC Congressional Delegation requesting help
with the USACE. The state-wide “BHI voice”, as represented by
your letters to your two Senators and your Representative, can
make an important difference in our beaches receiving much
needed sand this winter!
BHI Property Owners are well represented
in NC metropolitan areas and there are BHI property owners in
every NC Congressional District. When each BHI property owner
(or ownership couple or group member) contacts their Congressman
and their Senators, we will collectively have a significantly
larger and broader state-wide impact. North Carolina’s two
Senators and 13 Representatives should be able to attract the
attention of USACE leadership and increase pressure to have them
honor past promises and commitments made with regard to the
navigation channel.
We appreciate your thoughtful assistance
in this important undertaking. BHI, as we know it, is being
threatened by the USACE’s continuing inaction both in
maintaining the navigation channel and in their inaction in
recognizing and meeting beach erosion mitigation commitments
made before the Wilmington Harbor Project was constructed. We
must have sand this winter and your efforts, as requested
herein, will help maximize our chance of success.
To make it easier for you to contact
your Senators and your Representative we setup this website to
provide
information that will assist you in this important initiative.
We thank you for your presence on Bald Head Island and for your
assistance in this particularly important matter.
Please send your three letters today!
Thank you.
Sincerely,

J. Andrew Sayre, Mayor
Village of Bald Island
